How To Unblock A Downpipe

Wondering how to unblock a downpipe? The simplest method is to clear debris from your gutters, flush the pipe with a garden hose, and use a plumber’s snake if the blockage doesn’t shift. For tougher clogs or anything involving roof access, it’s safest to call a professional plumber, like our team at Bay Plumbing & Drainage.

Blocked downpipes are one of those plumbing issues that sneak up on you. One minute your gutters are doing their job, the next you’ve got water pooling around your foundation. If you’ve noticed slow drainage or overflow, it could be linked to winter plumbing problems common across Geelong and the Surf Coast.

If your downpipes aren’t draining properly, you’re in the right spot. Whether you need help with residential plumbing, commercial plumbing, or want to tackle a simple blockage yourself, we’ve got you covered.

What is a downpipe and why does it matter?

A downpipe is the vertical pipe on the outside of your home that carries rainwater from your gutters down to ground level and away from your property. When downpipes work properly, they protect your foundation, walls, and landscaping from water damage. But when they’re blocked, they can cause a whole lot of trouble.

Why downpipes get blocked

Here’s what usually causes the problem:

  • Leaves and debris from surrounding trees (especially common around Geelong during autumn)
  • Moss and algae growth in damp conditions
  • Bird or possum nests tucked inside the pipe
  • Broken roof tiles or gutter material washing down

The Surf Coast and Bellarine areas, with our coastal weather and native vegetation, see plenty of gum leaves and seedpods clogging gutters. We also cop plenty of wind being on the coast, which can blow debris straight into downpipes.

Warning signs you’ve got a blocked downpipe

There are a few telltale signs to look out for:

  • Water overflowing from gutters during rain
  • Pooling water near your home’s foundation
  • Damp patches on external walls
  • Gurgling noises from downpipes
  • Visible debris poking out the top
  • Sagging gutters

In some cases, you can try and unblock the downpipe yourself before calling in a professional.

How to unblock a downpipe yourself

Some blockages are simple enough to sort out with a bit of DIY effort. Here’s how to tackle the job safely:

Before you start:

  • Use a sturdy ladder on stable ground
  • Wear non-slip shoes, gloves, and safety glasses
  • Get someone to spot you
  • Never work in wet or windy conditions

Tools you’ll need:

  • A garden hose with good water pressure
  • A plumber’s snake or drain auger
  • A bucket and trowel for gutter debris
  • A wire coat hanger (straightened out)

Here’s a step-by-step clearing process for the DIYer

1. Clear the gutters first

Scoop out leaves, twigs, and muck from gutters around the downpipe. If the blockage’s in the pipe itself, clearing the gutter stops more rubbish washing down.

2. Check from the top

Look down into the top of the downpipe. Sometimes the blockage’s right there and you can pull it out by hand (though make sure you’ve got gloves on for this step).

3. Flush from above

Stick your garden hose into the top of the downpipe and turn it on full. Let the water run for a few minutes to dislodge lighter blockages.

4. Try the plumber’s snake

For stubborn blockages, feed a plumber’s snake down from the top. Work it up and down, rotating as you go, until the snake moves freely.

5. Test the flow

Once you think you’ve cleared it, run water through again. It should flow freely without backing up or overflowing.

When to call a professional plumber

Call in our team, the experts, if:

  • The blockage’s high up and unsafe to reach
  • Multiple downpipes are blocked
  • You’ve tried clearing it but water still won’t flow
  • The downpipe’s damaged or pulling away from the house
  • You’re not comfortable working at heights

We recently helped a homeowner in Torquay who’d spent hours trying to clear what looked like a simple blockage. Tree roots had actually grown into the underground stormwater  pipe, making it impossible to clear on their own. Our CCTV camera found the problem in minutes and, with the right professional tools, we were able to take care of it quickly and efficiently.

Geelong-specific considerations

We’re locals, so we understand the unique challenges that come with living in the Geelong and Surf Coast regions. Between falling leaves, windblown debris, and sudden downpours, gutters and downpipes can take a beating at any time of year. Regular checks, especially before the wetter months, help prevent blockages and protect your home from water damage.

Need more prevention tips?

Stay on top of maintenance to avoid future blockages:

  • Clean gutters at least twice a year (autumn and spring)
  • Install gutter guards to keep debris out
  • Trim overhanging branches
  • Add downpipe screens at the top
  • Book professional maintenance early

Get your downpipes flowing freely again

Blocked downpipes might seem minor, but left unchecked, they can cause serious damage to your home.
